Wordsworth, William B(rocklesby) (1908-1988)

English composer. He did not begin to study music seriously until he was 20, and in 1935 became a pupil of Donald Tovey. During World War II he took to farming, but after that devoted himself entirely to composition. He was a direct descendant of the poet's brother.

Works Oratorio Dies Domini (1944);

Orchestra and chorus The Houseless Dead (D H Lawrence) for baritone chorus and orchestra, Hymn of Dedication (Chesterton) for chorus and orchestra.

Orchestral eight symphonies (1944-86), theme and variations, Three Pastoral Sketches for orchestra, Sinfonia and Canzone and Ballade for strings; piano concerto, cello concerto.

Chamber six string quartets (1941-64); string trio; two sonatas for violin and piano, two sonatas for cello and piano; sonata and suite for piano.

Other three hymn-tune preludes for organ; Four Sacred Sonnets (Donne, 1944) and other songs; rounds for several voices.
