World Wide Web Consortium

Computing industry group which seeks to promote standards and coordinate developments in the World Wide Web. Founded in 1994 and based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Consortium is directed by Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the Web.

The W3 Consortium (WC3) is behind many initiatives, including the HTML (hypertext markup language) standard for building Web pages and the PICS content rating system. In 2007 it consisted of more than 60 staff and over 400 member organizations worldwide, including competing computing companies. Each member must sign a contract giving Berners-Lee the ultimate say in Web specifications. W3C has laboratories in France, managed by INRIA, and at Keio University, Japan.
