circumnavigation

Sailing around the world. The first ship to sail around the world was the Victoria, one of a Spanish squadron of five vessels that sailed from Seville in 1519 under the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan.

Four vessels were lost on the way, but the Victoria returned to Spain in September 1522 under Juan Sebastián Elcano (1476–1526). Magellan himself did not complete the voyage, but died in the Philippines in 1521.

The first English circumnavigator was Francis Drake, in 1577–80 in the Golden Hind.

A crew of 13 led by French yachtsman Bruno Peyron (1955– ) hold the record for fastest circumnavigation. Sailing on the Orange II, a 38 m/125 ft catamaran, in 2005, they circumnavigated the globe in 50 days 16 hours and 20 minutes.
