Worrell, Frank Mortimer Maglinne

    0.02 sec.

Worrell, Frank Mortimer Maglinne (1924–1967)

West Indian cricketer. He played for Barbados, Jamaica, and the West Indies. A right-handed batsman of great style, and a useful bowler, he made 3,860 runs in 51 tests between 1947 and 1963 at an average of 49.98. In 1960 he became the first African-Caribbean to be appointed captain of the West Indies, and under his leadership the team enjoyed sustained success for the first time.

At the age of 19 he made 308 not out against Trinidad. He scored 97 on his test debut against England in 1948, and a century in his next test. 1950, forming the fabled ‘Three W's’ batting line up with Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott, he played a major role in the West Indies' first ever series win against England, scoring 539 runs in the four tests, including a career best 261 at Nottingham. Under his captaincy from 1960 to 1963 the West Indies won nine out of fifteen tests. After his retirement he became a senator in the Jamaican Parliament, but he died of leukaemia at the age of 42.
