Worsley

Town in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester, England, about 10 km/6 mi from Manchester; population (2001) 12,450. It is mainly a residential area. Worsley was formerly a centre for coal mining.

The 3rd Duke of Bridgewater and the engineer James Brindley built the Bridgewater Canal 1762-72 to take coal from the duke's mines at Worsley to Manchester and the River Mersey.
