Worsley

Town in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester, England, about 10 km/6 mi from Manchester; population (2001) 12,450. It is mainly a residential area. Worsley was formerly a centre for coal mining.

The 3rd Duke of Bridgewater and the engineer James Brindley built the Bridgewater Canal 1762–72 to take coal from the duke's mines at Worsley to Manchester and the River Mersey.
