Wrangel, Karl Gustav (1613–1676)

Swedish army commander who played a leading role in the later campaigns of the Thirty Years' War (1618–48). In 1646 he succeeded Torstensson as commander-in-chief of Swedish forces in Germany.

Wrangel rose rapidly in the army, becoming a major-general of infantry by the age of 24. He fought bravely at the battles of Wolfenbüttel (1641) and Leipzig (1642), and took command of the Swedish fleet against the Danes in 1644–45.
