Wright, Ian Edward (1963– )

English footballer and television presenter who in 1997 broke Cliff Bastin's Arsenal club scoring record of 178 goals. He scored 9 goals in 31 England internationals.

Born in Woolwich, London, Wright signed to Crystal Palace in 1983. In 1991 he was sold to Arsenal, where he became one of the club's most popular players, and a prolific goal-scorer. After a series of injuries, Wright was sold to West Ham for the 1998–99 season. However, in the 1999–2000 season he first moved to Glasgow Celtic, and then to Burnley on loan. In 1999 he also launched his career as a television celebrity, hosting his own chat show, Friday Night's All Wright. He announced his retirement from football in June 2000. His adopted son Shaun Wright-Phillips (1981– ) also played for England.
