Wulfstan, St

    0.04 sec.

Wulfstan, St (c. 1009-1095)

Anglo-Saxon cleric, bishop of Worcester from 1062. He supported William the Conqueror and so was the only Anglo-Saxon bishop allowed to retain his see. He helped compile the Domesday Book and may have been involved in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. His sermons against the slave trade in Bristol were instrumental in bringing an end to the trade from the port. He was canonized 1203 and his feast day is 19 January.
