Wurtsmith Air Force Base

US Air Force Base in Iosco County, east-central Michigan; population (1990) 5,100. It is located 3 km/2 mi northwest of Oscoda, and 260 km/160 mi north-northwest of Detroit, to the west of Lake Huron. During the Cold War it was an important base for B-52 bombers.
