Wuxi

City in Jiangsu province, eastern China, situated on the Grand Canal 110 km/68 mi northwest of Shanghai in the Chang Jiang delta; population (1994) 960,700. It is a centre of the textile industry and is the largest silk-reeling centre in the country. Chemical industries and the manufacture of electrical and electronic goods are also important.

The city was developed by Shanghai merchants and industrialists. It used to hold one of the largest grain markets in China.
