Wyandotte

Town in Wayne County, southeast Michigan; population (1990) 30,900. It is situated on the Detroit River, 18 km/11 mi south of Detroit. Its manufactures include brass and iron goods, soda ash, chlorine gas, dry ice, plastic, paint, auto parts, dairy products, toys and novelties, and industrial diamonds.

The Huron American Indians ceded the area to a white settler in 1818. An iron company subsequently purchased the land in 1854. The first commercial Bessemer steel was produced from a blast furnace constructed here in 1864, and Wyandotte became an early steel centre. From 1872 to 1920, it was a major Great Lakes shipbuilding hub. Possessing large underlying salt deposits, it also became known for its chemical products.
