Wyszynski, Stepan

    0.06 sec.

Wyszynski, Stepan (1901–1981)

Polish Roman Catholic churchman, archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw and Primate of Poland from 1948 until his death. He was appointed a cardinal in 1952, but before he could take up his office, he was imprisoned for criticizing the Polish communist government and detained for three years. He finally became a cardinal in 1957, and concluded an uneasy truce between the Church and the administration of Wladyslaw Gomułka.

Born in Zuzela, Wyszynski was educated at Lublin University, ordained a priest in 1924, and became bishop of Lublin in 1946. On his death, he was succeeded as Primate of Poland by Jozef Glemp.
