Wytheville

Town and administrative headquarters of Wythe County, southwest Virginia; population (1990) 8,000. It is situated in the Great Appalachian Valley, 53 km/33 mi southwest of Radford. It is a trade and vacation centre for the area. The town is home to the Wytheville Community College (1962). Founded in 1792, Wytheville had lead and salt mines fought over by Union and Confederate forces in July 1863.
