Khanaqin

Town in eastern Iraq, 150 km/93 mi northeast of Baghdad; population (1985) 30,800. Khanaqin is situated on a tributary of the River Diyala, close to the border with Iran. It is the commercial centre of the very productive agricultural area of the Alwand valley. The main industry is provided by an oil refinery situated at Alwand, 5 km/3 mi to the southeast of the town and supplied by nearby oil fields.
