Xankändi

Capital of Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous oblast in Azerbaijan, 95 km/59 mi southeast of Gäncä; population (2001 est) 63,300. Silk production is a key industry in the city. As in the surrounding region, the city's inhabitants are predominantly ethnic Armenians.

The city's name was changed when Azerbaijan gained independence; it was formerly named in honour of the Baku communist leader Stepan Shaumya.
