Xikang

Former province in the west of China, lying between Sichuan and Tibet, and watered by the Chang Jiang; its area was 451,520 sq km/174,331 sq mi. It embraced almost all of eastern Tibet. The province was merged partly with Sichuan and partly with Tibet in 1955. Main roads link the area with Sichuan and Qinghai. The Chengdu-Lhasa highway built in 1955 crosses the area from east to west.
