Young Men's Christian Association

International organization founded in 1844 by George Williams (1821–1905) in London and in 1851 in the USA. It aims at self-improvement – spiritual, intellectual, and physical. Although the organization began as a Christian movement, YMCAs are now largely secular and apolitical.

In their mission of community-building, YMCAs offer programs for families, especially recreational programs for children such as swimming lessons and summer camps, as well as workout facilities for adults.

YMCAs provide dormitories and rooms for both transients and residents as well as educational and civic programs.
