Young Women's Christian Association

International organization for the welfare of women and girls. Founded in London, England, in 1855, it was a response to the negative effects of the Industrial Revolution on women. The world headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland, with branches in some 125 countries.

The first YWCA in the US was formally established in 1858 in New York, New York. Modern chapters focus on leadership, health, early childhood programs, racial equality, and prevention of domestic violence.
