Yadkin

River in western central North Carolina, USA; length 320 km/200 mi. It is formed by headwaters in the Blue Ridge Mountains and joins the Uwharrie River to form the Pee Dee River flowing out to the Atlantic Ocean.

Course

After forming northwest of Lenoir, it flows southeast, then northeast. It is dammed west of Wilkesboro to form the W Kerr Scott Reservoir, then continues northeast through Elkin and swings southeast to the west of Winston-Salem. Winding south, it is joined north of Salisbury by the South Yadkin River. On the east side of Salisbury, it flows through High Rock Lake, formed by a dam at High Rock Mountain. Some 16 km/10 mi further southeast, it enters dam-created Badin Lake, then joins the Uwharrie.
