Yakar, Rachel (1938– )

French soprano. She studied with Germaine Lubin in Paris, and made her debut at Strasbourg, in 1963. She sang with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (1964–85). In 1976 she appeared both at Bayreuth and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London; she performed the role of Freia in 1978. She sang Donna Elvira and the Marschallin at Glyndebourne (1977, 1980); in 1980 she appeared as Jenůfa in Geneva. She is widely known as a performer of Baroque repertory: she has performed Monteverdi's Poppea at Zurich, Handel's Cleopatra at Amsterdam, and Rameau's Aricie and Cecilio in Lucio Silla. Her recordings include Les Indes Galantes, Leclair's Scylla et Glaucus, and Lully's Armide.
