Yakima

City and administrative headquarters of Yakima County, south-central Washington, USA, on the Yakima River, 155 km/97 mi southeast of Seattle; population (2000) 71,800. It is the commercial and processing centre of an agricultural region created from the desert by irrigation. Products include sugar beet, apples, mint, hops, livestock, cider, flour, and canned-foods. Yakima Valley College was established here in 1928. The city hosts the annual Central Washington State Fair.

Settled in 1861 and incorporated in 1883, it was named after the Yakima (now called the Yakama) peoples. The Yakima Nation Museum is located in Toppenish, 32 km/20 mi south of Yakima.
