Yakama Indian Reservation

American Indian reservation in south-central Washington; area 5,450 sq km/2,104 sq mi; population (1990) 27,700. It is situated on the east of the Cascade Range, south of Yakima and the Yakima River. Sahaptin tribes were settled here in 1859, after disputes over an 1855 treaty had led to the three-year Yakima War. Fort Simcoe (1856) was established to restore US control in the area. Toppenish is the reservation's business centre. Forest products are important to the local economy.

The name Yakama was adopted in the mid-1990s.
