Yallourn

Mine and former town in La Trobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, about 165 km/103 mi east of Melbourne. Yallourn has one of the world's largest open-cast coalmining operations, with an annual output of 28 million tonnes of brown coal (sometimes known as lignite). The population of the town of Yallourn was moved to nearby towns such as Moe, Morwell, Traralgon, and Yallourn North (population (1996) 1,216) between 1969 and 1982, so that brown coal reserves below the Yallourn townsite could be exploited. The old town is now referred to as the Yallourn works site.

Open-cast mining is operated by Loy Yang Power, the state of Victoria's largest energy producer. The Yallourn mines provide coal to power stations in La Trobe Valley which generate 85 % of Victoria's electrical power.
