Yalom, Irvin D(avid) (1931- )

US psychiatrist and educator. He was an influential proponent of the existential approach to psychotherapy. Born in Washington, DC, he gained his MD from Boston University and taught psychiatry at Stanford's medical school from 1962, where he also directed the Adult Psychiatry Clinic from 1973. His books include The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy (1970, later revised) and Existential Psychotherapy (1980).
