Yamagata

Capital of Yamagata prefecture, northern Honshu, Japan; population (2005) 256,000. Situated in an inland mountain basin, it is the centre of a large rice-producing district. Industries include silk reeling and the manufacture of lacquerware, sewing machines, and cast-iron products. Other major local products include cherries, sake, and canned fruits.

Yamagata is home to Yamagata University (1949). The nearby Risshakuji temple complex, founded in 860 and rebuilt in 1543, is famed for its cherry blossoms. The nearby Zaozan mountain range is popular for skiing.
