Yamethin

Town of Mandalay division, central Myanmar; population (1979 est) 163,800. The town grew as a junction on the caravan route linking the Shan region to the east with Myingyan on the Irrawaddy River to the northwest. It is still a centre for trade with Shan state, and the surrounding district produces rice by irrigation, millet, and oilseed. Yamethin lies on the Yangon-Mandalay rail route, and there are railway workshops in the town.
