Yamethin

Town of Mandalay division, central Myanmar; population (1979 est) 163,800. The town grew as a junction on the caravan route linking the Shan region to the east with Myingyan on the Irrawaddy River to the northwest. It is still a centre for trade with Shan state, and the surrounding district produces rice by irrigation, millet, and oilseed. Yamethin lies on the Yangon–Mandalay rail route, and there are railway workshops in the town.
