The wombat is a powerfully built marsupial. There are three species found in Australia and one in Tasmania. In some ways, they resemble badgers, being large burrowing animals, building burrows up to 30 m/100 ft long with a nest chamber at the end.

Any of a family (Vombatidae) of burrowing, herbivorous marsupials, native to Tasmania and southern Australia. They are about 1 m/3.3 ft long, heavy, with a big head, short legs and tail, and coarse fur.

The two living species include the common wombat Vombatus ursinus of Tasmania and southeastern Australia, and Lasiorhirnus latifrons, the plains wombat of southern Australia.
