Ioannina

Town in Greece, capital of Ioannina department, on the shore of Lake Ioannina, about 80 km/50 mi from the sea and 480 m/1,575 ft above sea level, opposite the island of Corfu; population (2001 est) 63,100. It has a tanning and fur-dressing industry.

The town was first mentioned in 859. It was conquered by the Turks in 1430, was the stronghold of Ali Pasha from 1788 until 1822, and was captured by the Greeks in the Balkan Wars in 1913.

It is the seat of an archbishop.

US Open semi-finalist Yanina Wickmayer yesterday insisted she has been treated unfairly after being banned for a year under anti-doping rules.
Belgian players Yanina Wickmayer and Xavier Malisse were both handed one-year suspensions last week for failing to notify their national doping agency where they could be reached, under a ruling the WTA believes is a little too stringent.
Yanina Wickmayer, a semifinalist at the US Open in September, is considering an appeal against a one-year ban for failing to comply with doping regulations.
