Yankton

Dialect of the American Indian Siouan-Nakota language.

Yankton

Town and administrative headquarters of Yankton County, southeast South Dakota; population (1990) 12,700. It is situated on the Missouri River and the Nebraska state line, 89 km/55 mi southwest of Sioux Falls. A trading, food processing, and shipping centre for an area where grain, livestock, and dairy items are produced, it has grain elevators, poultry hatcheries, and creameries. Its manufactures include cement products, trailers, elevators, aircraft and electronic components, crates, brick, and sheet metal products. It is home to the Yankton College (1881) and Mount Marty College (1922). Lewis and Clark Lake, 6 km/4 mi to the west, is a popular recreational area.

Yankton was settled in 1858 as a fur trading post. After the announcement of plans to confine the Sioux on reservations, it was the site of an Indian uprising in 1861; a government fort was built here in 1862. From 1861–83, Yankton was the Dakota territorial capital. The old capitol has been preserved.
