Yasnaya Polyana

Village in the Tula oblast (region) of the western Russian Federation, 14 km/9 mi south of the city of Tula. It is the birthplace (in 1828) of the writer Leo Tolstoy, who made it his home for over 50 years after inheriting the family estate in 1847. Most of his works were written here. His house is now a museum, and his grave is situated in a nearby wood.

Tolstoy founded a village school at Yasnaya Polyana to put into practice his liberal ideas on education.
