Yazoo City

Town and administrative headquarters of Yazoo County, west-central Mississippi; population (1990) 12,400. It is situated on the Yazoo River, 61 km/38 mi north-northwest of Jackson. Yazoo City is a trade centre for cattle, soybean, corn, and cotton producers. Its industries make chemicals, fertilizer, machinery, and textiles.

Yazoo City was founded in 1824, and the site of a Confederate navy yard during the Civil War, it saw several skirmishes, and was partially burned in 1864. It was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1904. An oil refinery went into operation after the state's first oil well began production nearby in 1939.
