Yazoo

River in western central Mississippi; length 303 km/188 mi. It is formed by the confluence of the Tallahatchie and Yalobusha rivers north of Greenwood and flows southwest through the Mississippi Alluvial Plain to join the Mississippi River at Vicksburg. The Yazoo valley is a centre of cotton production.

Chief cities along the river are Greenwood and Yazoo City. Its largest tributary is the Sunflower River, which joins it northeast of Vicksburg.

During the American Civil War (1861–65) control of the Yazoo was critical in the Vicksburg Campaign.
