Yeavering

Village in Northumberland, northeast England, 6 km/4 mi northwest of Wooler. Yeavering lies at the edge of the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland national park. Nearby is Yeavering Bell (360 m/1,182 ft), a hill with an Iron Age hill fort on its summit.

Excavations in the area have revealed remains of what is believed to be the palace of the Anglo-Saxon King Edwin of Northumbria. Remains have been discovered of a great hall, several smaller halls, and a large, multitiered structure, erected in timber in the early 7th century. The township was burnt in 633 by the enemies of King Edwin, but it was twice rebuilt before being abandoned at the end of the same century.
