Yell

Second largest of the Shetland Islands, Scotland, 3 km/2 mi north of Mainland; population (2001) 957. It extends over an area of 208 sq km/80 sq mi, including the island of Hascosay. Peat moorland, cut locally for fuel, covers most of the interior. Crofting (a form of subsistence farming) is confined to the more fertile coastal plains. Trout and sea fishing also form a valuable part of the island's economy. Its main settlement is the harbour town of Burravoe.
