Yemassee

Yemassee

Resort and agricultural town in Hampton and Beaufort counties, southwest South Carolina; population (1990) 700. It is located 32 km/20 mi northwest of Beaufort. The town is named after the Yamasee, who lived in the area from 1687–1715, during a period of strife with settlers, before returning to their Florida homeland.
