Yermak (or Ermak) (died 1584)

Cossack military leader (ataman; Ukrainian hetman) who began the Russian conquest of Siberia under Ivan (IV) the Terrible. In 1581-84, while in the service of the rich merchant Anika Stroganov, he led a force of 840 Cossacks and other soldiers that defeated the Tatar army of the Sibir Khanate and conquered its capital Kashlyk. He was killed at the Irtysh river during a counterattack by Tatar forces.
