Yining

Town in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China on the River Ili about 700 km/435 mi west of Urumqi; population (1994) 289,800. It is the centre of the Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture and an important centre for trade with Kazakhstan. Ili apples are sold throughout China.
