Yogyakarta

City in Java, Indonesia, capital 1945–49; population (2000) 599,100. It is the cultural centre of the Javanese ethnic group, and the centre for a rich agricultural region, producing rice, sugar cane, and tobacco. The chief industries are batik textiles, handicrafts, and tourism. It lies on the Jakarta–Surabaya railway.

Yogyakarta is home to the University of Gadjah Mada (1949) and the Islamic University of Indonesia (1945). Nearby is Mount Merapi, a volcano that last erupted in February 2001. The Buddhist pyramid shrine to the northwest at Borobudur (122 sq m/400 sq ft) was built 750–850.
