Yogyakarta

City in Java, Indonesia, capital 1945-49; population (1997 est) 421,000. It is the cultural centre of the Javanese ethnic group, and the centre for a rich agricultural region, producing rice, sugar cane, and tobacco. The chief industries are batik textiles, handicrafts, and tourism. It lies on the Jakarta-Surabaya railway.

Yogyakarta is home to the University of Gadjah Mada (1949) and the Islamic University of Indonesia (1945). Nearby is Mount Merapi, a volcano that last erupted in February 2001. The Buddhist pyramid shrine to the northwest at Borobudur (122 sq m/400 sq ft) was built 750-850.
