Yokosuka

Seaport and naval station in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan, on Tokyo Bay, 20 km/12 mi south of Yokohama; population (2005) 426,200. Local industries include car assembly.

Yokosuka is situated in a large, naturally sheltered harbour, which aided its development as a shipyard from 1865.

At the time of the collision, the Kurama was on its way back to its home port of Sasebo on Kyushu, after attending an MSDF ceremony on Sunday in the port of Yokosuka, south of Tokyo.
Taking over the first woman's dental college in Japan, set up in 1910 in Tokyo, the college relocated to Yokosuka in 1963 and has about 1,400 students.
The ship is based at Yokosuka Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan.
