Yonkers

City in Westchester County, New York State, USA, on the Hudson River, just north of the Bronx, New York City; population (2000) 196,100. Industries include food-processing and the manufacture of machinery, chemicals, clothing, and electric and electronic equipment. It is also a residential suburb of the metropolis of New York. Yonkers was a Dutch settlement from about 1650.

In 1733 it was the venue of the Great Election which contributed to the ten freedoms stated in the US Bill of Rights; the event is commemorated by the St Paul National Historic Site. In 1735 John Zenger was tried for seditious libel; his acquittal aided the development of freedom of the press in the USA.

Yonkers is the seat of Sarah Lawrence College.
