Yoshkar-Ola

Capital city and cultural centre of the Mari E L Republic in the west-central Russian Federation, situated 50 km/31 mi north of the Volga on its tributary, the Malaya Kokshaga River; population (1996 est) 251,000. Yoshkar-Ola has light industries (producing machinery and pharmaceuticals), textile mills, and food-processing plants.

Yoshkar-Ola was founded in 1584 by the Russians as a fortress town and administrative centre in the territory of the Mari (or Cheremys), a Finno-Ugric people.
