Young, (Basil) Alexander (1920- )

English tenor. He studied in London, Naples, and Vienna. After singing in the Glyndebourne chorus and performing some small roles, he became one of the leading English operatic and concert singers. One of his best-known roles was that of Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, which he recorded under the composer's baton. He appeared in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden between 1955 and 1970 as Vasěk, Matteo, and Lysander; at Sadler's Wells Theatre he performed Count Ory, Almaviva, and Belmonte. He also sang Orpheus (both Gluck and Monteverdi) and performed many roles in works by Handel. He taught at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester between 1973 and 1986.
