Young, Percy M(arshall) (1912-2004)

English music educationist, conductor, and writer on music. He was educated at Christ's Hospital and Cambridge, where he was organ scholar at Selwyn College. He took the Masters and Bachelor of Music degrees in Cambridge, before moving to Trinity College, Dublin where he became Doctor of Music. In 1934 he assumed the post of director of music at the Teachers' Training College, Belfast; in 1945 he was made director of music studies at Wolverhampton Technical College. He published part-songs and various collections for children, articles in music periodicals, and a large number of books (the subjects of which include Elgar, Handel, Sullivan, and Vaughan Williams). His realization of Elgar's sketches for the opera The Spanish Lady was premiered at Cambridge in 1994.
