Britart

Term used for work produced by an informal movement of young British artists during the 1990s, characterized by unusual and controversial media and subject matter inspired by popular culture. Artists like Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin exemplified the movement.

Britart emerged from a legendary exhibition, Freeze, staged in 1988 by Damien Hirst in a warehouse in London's Docklands. The movement was popularized by the Saatchi Collection of art.
