Youssoufi, Abderrahmane (1924– )

Moroccan politician; prime minister 1998–2002. He joined the Parti de l'Istiqlal (PI) in 1944 and participated in the formation of the left-wing National Union of Popular Forces in 1959 (renamed the Socialist Union of Popular Forces in 1975), which he led from 1992.

Harassed and arrested on several occasions in 1959, 1963, and 1965, he departed for Paris in November 1965. While in exile he was condemned to death during the Marrakesh trials 1969–75. Granted a pardon in 1980, he returned to Morocco and, following the 1997 legislative elections, became prime minister in February 1998.
