Population pyramids are a useful way of summarizing population development and can be used to predict future changes. The ‘pyramid’ shape with a wide base narrowing upwards is typical of less economically developed countries (LEDCs). The more rectangular, pillar-shaped ‘pyramid’ is typical of more economically developed countries (MEDCs).
