Town and administrative headquarters of Siskiyou County, north California; population (1990) 6,900. It is located 162 km/101 mi northeast of Eureka, between the Klamath Mountains and the Cascade Range. An 1851 gold town, it subsequently became a ranching, lumbering, and trade centre, hub for an extensive forest and mountain area. The town serves as headquarters for the Klamath National Forest, and is a tourist centre noted for its restored buildings.

In 1941 it was briefly proposed as the capital of the would-be ‘State of Jefferson’, incorporating parts of north California and south Oregon.
