Yuanmingyuan

Palace outside Beijing, China, begun in the 18th century by Emperor Kangxi, but mostly built 1747–59 by his grandson Qianlong. The palace was burned down by Lord Elgin October 1860 as revenge for cruelty shown to Western prisoners taken during the advance on Beijing the preceding month. The palace, from its destruction, became a symbol of national humiliation.
